Early reviews for the 2022 Readathon

Here are some of the book reviews that have been written by our lovely students over the holidays:

Iris, who is in Year 4 and from Room 3, wrote this about The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, a fantastic novel written in words and pictures about a young boy, who when left alone, is able to fend for himself and find out where he has come from.

Hugo is adventurous and likes to figure things out. His father died in a fire and Hugo is left to finish his fathers work. It’s the longest book I’ve ever read and I really enjoyed it. Me and Nana Pip both found the pictures really cool and the story was really good because anything could happen at any time. I never knew what was coming. For people who like mysteries

Megamonster by David Walliams – a review by Josie, also from Year 4, in Room 2:

This is an exciting book with magical powerful characters. This book you can’t put it down! You will encounter wonderful adventures that will never end (unless the book finishes of course) if you have read the adventurous David Walliams.

Ruth Sepetys Between Shades of Gray – The Graphic Novel. The original novel, published in 2011 about Lithuanians displaced to Siberia by the Russians in World War 2, has become a classic but is not an easy read. The graphic novel has made this important story accessible to many more young people. Here is a review by Maelys, from Year 8 in Room 11

This book is an amazing war book about a girl and her mum and brother trying to survive World War 2 . It is a bit sad but it’s amazing to know about what happened at that time and how the world changed. I think it’s one of the best comics I have ever read.

Who would enjoy this?

People that love survival, war and action.

Go Girl – a compilation by Barbara Else about many well-known and some not so well- known New Zealand women. A review by Zoe from Year 8 of Room 11:

Go girl is an amazing book about New Zealand woman heroes. I love this book because I like hearing about what all the girls have done/are doing over their lifetime. It is really interesting as you hear about things you wouldn’t know about without the book, ranging from how Sophie Pascoe lost her leg to where they lived! I love this book and I think lots of girls would too!

This is the second Dog Man book. He has a head of a dog and a body of a man and a heart of a hero. By Benjamin in Room 2.

Rising Star, from the gymnastics series by Cate Shearwater. A review by Isla in Room 2:

If you like gymnastics you should read this book /series. It’s a great book – there’s friendship, humour, a tiny bit of circus and best of all lots of cool gymnastics and circus tricks 🙂
