New Zealand author Helen Griffiths delights!

Helen Griffiths is one of the busiest people you could ever meet! Not only is she a business owner, mother, a teacher, a speech and language therapist and a poet, she is also incredibly interested in looking after all of the amazing animals that live on our beautiful planet.

One night, to calm her nerves at a stressful time, she wrote a poem about the strange names we give to groups of animals, or collective nouns. She liked it so much in her head that she decided to add another job to her list, that of published author. Her book is so good, she even received a thank you letter from both Sir David Attenborough and from the Duchess of Cambridge!

Helen visited our school by way of a virtual visit. Here you can see our Year 1 and 2 children enjoying her presentation. All of our junior children loved the way she introduced herself and read her book to us.

Her book is so popular that it is never in the library, so if you want to buy a copy, The Children’s Bookshop in Kilbirnie stocks them. If you would like one signed, Helen can send you one directly. Ask Mrs Bamber for the free shipping code. Her website is here. It includes a glossary of a big list of collective nouns. Did you know that a group of hummingbirds is called a charm?

How lucky we were that such a busy lady made time to talk to us!
